Longtime owner of Exxon station
G. Clifford Adams, 86, of Elverson, formerly of 321 Ridge Avenue, Washington, died Wednesday, November 6, 2002, in Reading Hospital, following a brief illness.
He was born May 25, 1916, in Washington County, a son of George and Effie Adams.
Mr. Adams attended First Christian Church of Washington.
He was a graduate of East Washington High School and Washington Business School.
During World War II, Mr. Adams served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Salt Lake City, participating in landings on Okinawa and Iwo Jima.
He owned and operated Adams Exxon in Washington for more than 46 years before retiring in 1995. At that time, he was the second-longest tenured Exxon dealer in Pennsylvania. He was a grand master in Exxon's Commitment to Excellence program, only one of 10 in the country.
Mr. Adams was a member of Sunset Lodge 623, Syria Temple of Pittsburgh, Washington Lions Club, Washington Elks and Washington Optimist Club.
On February 14, 1939, he married Ruth E. Jones, who died December 18, 1988.
Surviving are two sons, Dennis L. Adams of Washington and Jack C. Adams of Elverson; three grandchildren, Steven, Brent and Lindsay Adams; and a great-grandchild.
Deceased are a brother, Robert Adams; and a sister, Blanche Keenan.
ADAMS - Friends of G. Clifford Adams of Elverson, formerly of 321 Ridge Avenue, Washington, who died Wednesday, November 6, 2002, will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and 1 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. Interment will be private and held in Washington Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
