Helen Louise Shaffer, 86, of Washington, died at 8:47 a.m. Monday, August 1, 2005, in her home. She was born November 7, 1918, in Bessemer, a daughter of Robert Dean and Jennie Lois Davidson Harman. Mrs. Shaffer worked as a licensed practical nurse at Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. She was a member of Faith United Presbyterian Church in Washington. Mrs. Shaffer was a member of Silver Chalice Chapter Order of the Eastern Star 530 and volunteered at Presbyterian Medical Center. She was a graduate of North Beaver Township Consolidated High School and completed two years of nursing training at Allegheny General Hospital. On May 19, 1937, she married James Adam Shaffer, who died June 19, 1983. Surviving are a daughter, Janis Marthene Selway of Washington; a sister, Estella Brown of Bessemer; two grandchildren, Dian Lynn Cataldo and Darlene Louise D'Oro; and nine great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Kelsey and Nathan Cataldo, Alyssa, Evan, Eric, Christopher and Mia D'Oro and Michael Falcone. Deceased are a brother, Donald Harman; and a sister, Betty Brown.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington and 11 a.m. until noon, the hour of service, Thursday, August 4, in Mt. Jackson United Presbyterian Church, New Castle, with the Rev. Ed Gray officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Jackson United Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family requests memorial donations be made to the Heart Association or Alzheimer's Association.
