Charles Albert Gallaer, 85, of Upper St. Clair, died Tuesday, June 17, 2008, in Canonsburg General Hospital, following a brief illness.
He was born July 30, 1922, in Brooklyn, New York, a son of Charles Walker and Clara Dooley Gallaer.
He grew up in New York City, where he graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School. He then graduated first in his class at Cooper-Union College.
During World War II, he served in the United States Army, rose to the rank of corporal, and traveled to England, France, the Philippines and Japan.
In 1947, he married Angela Pascale, and they had a daughter, Teresa, in 1955. Angela died in 1993.
Mr. Gallaer was a self-employed professional engineer and consultant, working to reduce air pollution from coal-fired power plants. He became a national expert in his field and traveled extensively for his work. He visited every state except Alaska.
He enjoyed a happy retirement with longtime companion, Leru McCloskey.
Mr. Gallaer is survived by his daughter, Teresa, six nieces and two nephews.
Burial will be in Calverton National Cemetery, New York.
