John Pate McClelland, 76, of Washington, died Friday, June 19, 2009, in his home.
He was born March 20, 1933, in Maple Hill, KS, a son of the late Paul and Margaret Romick McClelland.
Mr. McClelland was employed as a herdsman for cattle ranches in West Virginia, Virginia, and Delaware, before coming to Washington, PA, in 1960, to work for the Lone Pine Ranch. He became the superintendent when the ranch was converted into the Lone Pine Golf Club, retiring in 1997.
He was an active member of Liberty United Methodist Church since 1960 and served in various capacities.
Mr. McClelland was a member of the Masonic Lodge, in Claysville, and past member of the Greater Pittsburgh Golf Course Superintendents Association. He was an active community leader, and a leader of local 4-H and Boy Scout Troops.
He enjoyed working outdoors, doing lawn care, and landscaping.
Mr. McClelland had a beautiful singing voice and frequently sang to shut-ins and at memorials.
On June 20, 1954, in Negley, Ohio, he married Martha Ann Gorby, who survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Craig (Nancy) McClelland, of Easton, and Mark (Jean) McClelland, of The Woodlands, TX; a daughter, Dale McClelland, of Alexandria, VA; four grandchildren, Shona, Brian, Ashley and Amanda McClelland.
Survivors also include brothers, David McClelland and Gerald McClelland, and a sister, Mary Fisher.
Preceded in death are six brothers, Laurence McClelland, W. Charles McClelland, Kenneth McClelland, Dean McClelland, Tom McClelland, and an infant brother, Paul McClelland, and two sisters, Pauline Arnold and Margaret Reding.
Friends will be received 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Monday, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 395 E. Maiden Street, Washington. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 23, 2009, in Liberty United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Lois Swestyn and the Rev. Larry G. Wiltrout co-officiating. Burial will be private and held at the convenience of the family. The family suggests memorial contributions to Family Hospice, 50 Moffett Street, Mt. Lebanon, PA 15243, or Liberty United Methodist Church 1330 Banetown Road, Washington, PA 15301.
