William Bradford Mawhinney, 90, of Thomas Campbell Apartments, died Thursday, October 30, 2008, in the Donnell House, following a one-month illness.
He was born March 1, 1918, in Canonsburg, a son of Charles Henry and Emma Jane Weaver Mawhinney.
Mr. Mawhinney attended Clark School and Washington High School. He also attended the State Police Academy in Hershey.
He was a City of Washington police officer for more than 20 years and owned William Mawhinney Awnings for more than 20 years.
Mr. Mawhinney was a member of Fourth Presbyterian Church where he had served at times as trustee, deacon and elder.
During World War II, he served in Europe in the 284th Field Artillery Battalion under General Patton. He was honorably discharged on December 2, 1945, as a technician, fourth grade.
On July 31, 1942, in Fourth Presbyterian Church, he married Ethel Mary Hunt, who survives. They had celebrated 66 years of marriage.
Also surviving are two sons, William B. “Brad” (Delia) Mawhinney of Key Largo, Florida, and Dr. Bruce (Carol) Mawhinney of Lancaster; three grandchildren, Paul (Holley) Mawhinney of Camp Hill, Susan Mawhinney of Lancaster and Jessica Gonzolez of Miami, Florida.
Deceased are seven brothers, Ernest, Homer, James, John, Charles, Samuel and Paul Mawhinney; and a sister, Lois Dean.
There will be no public visitation. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 1, 2008, in Fourth Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Dr. Susan VandeKappelle officiating. Burial will be private in National Cemetery of the Alleghenies. Memorial donations may be made to Fourth Presbyterian Church, Donnell House, Campus Life or Child Evangelism Outreach. William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Washington, is in charge of arrangements.
