James Ashley Cordy, 88, of Washington, died Thursday, January 22, 2009, in Canonsburg General Hospital.
He was born July 8, 1920, in Washington, a son of Thomas Ivor M. and Matilda Shanley Cordy.
Mr. Cordy graduated from Washington High School and retired from Penn Mould where he had worked as a mould maker.
During World War II, Mr. Cordy enlisted in the United States Navy. He served from May 4, 1942, until his honorable discharge as a machinist�s mate, first class, on December 17, 1945. He earned the World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Medal with one bronze star, and the Good Conduct Medal. On September 25, 1950, Mr. Cordy was called to active duty from the Navy Reserves. He was on active duty until December 2, 1951, when he returned to the Navy Reserves. For his service, he was awarded the Korean Service Medal and the Navy Occupation Medal.
Mr. Cordy was a member of the Elks and Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion.
On March 10, 1946, he married Evelyn Arthur, who died January 8, 1997.
Surviving are a son, James T. (Deborah) Cordy of Pittsburgh; a daughter, Jill (Dane) C. Frick of Washington; a brother, John I. Cordy of Washington; one grandchild, Alyssa (Kerim) Akgonul; three great-grandchildren, James Jonathan, Elizabeth Jane and Oliver Thomas Akgonul.
Deceased is a brother, Robert L. Cordy.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 7th, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. Inurnment will follow in Washington Cemetery.
