Dale A. Wood, Sr., 72, of Chartiers Township, died Monday, December 22, 2008, in the Washington Hospital, following a lengthy illness.
He was born April 19, 1935, in Waynesburg, a son of J. Harry and Mildred Phillips Wood.
Mr. Wood graduated from Mapletown High School and attended Penn State and California University.
He served in the United States Marine Corps. in Korea and Japan, earning the Korean Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged on February 27, 1956, with a rank of sergeant. He was very proud to have served in the Marines.
From 1958 until 1978, Mr. Wood worked at Federal Paper Board, Inc., as a printing foreman, lithographing purchasing agent, and a corporate printing coordinator. He then worked as supervisor of buildings and grounds at Chartiers-Houston School District, 1979 – 1990, and from 1990 till 1996 as director of facilities management services in the Trinity Area School District. After retirement, he was construction manager for Burgettstown and Avella School Districts.
Mr. Wood enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and working in his yard.
He was Catholic by faith.
On February 2, 1957, he married Frances Olbrish, who survives.
Also surviving are a daughter, Sherry (J.R.) Sweeney of Washington; a brother, Roger (Toni) Wood of Washington; and three grandchildren, Sara Ann Wood, Cody Dale Wood and Michael Dale Sweeney.
Deceased are a son, Dale A. Wood Jr.; and a sister, Janet Pryor.
Friends will be received 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, December 27th, in Immaculate Conception Church. Burial will follow in Mt. Prospect Cemetery, Hickory.
