John R. Stedman, 76, of Washington, died Thursday, January 29, 2009, in his residence.
He was born April 7, 1932, in Washington, a son of Harry and Florence Burke Stedman.
Mr. Stedman graduated from Washington High School in 1950 and went on to work at Washington Steel Corporation for 37 years. His last position was on the pickling line.
He attended Abundant Life Baptist Church.
Mr. Stedman was a veteran of the United States Air Force, serving from November 19, 1952, until his honorable discharge of August 20, 1956, as an airman, second class. He spent one year his enlistment in Korea. Mr. Stedman’s was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal.
On July 24, 1954, he married Joyce Renz, who survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Ronald Stedman of Washington and Bryon Stedman of Bradenton, Florida; a daughter, Pamela (Kent) Montgomery of Washington; five grandchildren, Jordan Montgomery, Sean Montgomery, Allison Stedman, Michael (Kristen) Stedman and Marc Stedman; and one great-grandchild, Hanna Stedman. His second great-grandchild is due in May.
Deceased is a sister, Joyce Stedman Phillips.
Friends will be received 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. Additional visitation will be held from 10 till 11 a.m., the hour of service, Tuesday, February 3, in Abundant Life Baptist Church, Washington. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded graveside by Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion. Memorial contributions may be made to Abundant Life Baptist Church, 269 Cameron Road, Washington PA 15301; or Hospice Care of the Washington Hospice, 155 Wilson Avenue, Washington PA 15301.
