Frank S. Sanpietro, 89, of Washington, died Monday, February 9, 2009, in Washington Hospital, following a lengthy illness.
He was born March 13, 1919, in Berdine, a son of Sam and Mary Luchsie Sanpietro.
Mr. Sanpietro was the owner/operator of Frank and Lydia�s Tavern for 30 years and also was a shoemaker.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Loyal Order of the Moose 22 and Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion.
Mr. Sanpietro loved his dog, Sabo, and enjoyed fishing and taking his children and grandchildren to sporting events.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater, where he saw action in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He was awarded a Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Service Medal and European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with five bronze service stars. He was honorably discharged November 2, 1945, as a technician, 5th grade.
His wife, Mary Longo Sanpietro, is deceased.
Surviving are two sons, Frank (Carla) Sanpietro and Joseph Sanpietro, both of Canonsburg; a daughter, Rosemary (Bill) Kuschmeider of Houston, Texas; a brother, Leonard (Nancy) Sanpietro, of Washington; three sisters, Kathryn Rush of Washington, Genevieve Russell of Hickory and Mary Nice of Elyria, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and his loving and caring companion, Shirley George.
Deceased are a son, Sam Sanpietro, and a sister, Josephine Metz.
Friends will be received 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, February 12, with the Rev. Harold McClelland officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray. Military rites will be accorded graveside by Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion.
