Edgar "Lefty" Lauther

Edgar Kenneth “Lefty” Lauther, 90, of Claysville, formerly of Washington, died Monday, October 5, 2009, in the Washington Hospital. He was born May 26, 1919, in Washington, a son of Edgar F. and Bridget Raipe Lauther. Mr. Lauther attended Washington High School. On January 4, 1943, he entered the United States Army. During his service, he was assigned to Company C of the 104th Engineering Battalion and was involved in battles in the Southern Philippines, Eastern Mandates, Western Mandates and Ryukus. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with four bronze service stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 2 bronze stars, Good Conduct Ribbon and a Soldier’s Medal. He was honorably discharged on October 16, 1945, with a rank of Technician, fifth grade. For over 40 years, he worked at Brockway Glass and served as a union representative. Mr. Lauther attended Immaculate Conception Church. He was a member of Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion, where he had been a member of its firing squad and helped with bingo. He enjoyed the fundraising events and volunteering at the legion. On August 31, 1950, he married Agnes Flynn, who died August 31, 2002. Surviving are two sons, Edgar (Patricia) Lauther of Upper St. Clair and Sidney Lauther of Canonsburg; two sisters, Patricia Brown of Claysville and Judith Stewart of Erie; a sister-in-law, Aileen Lauther; a brother-in-law, John Jarosz; two grandchildren, Edgar D. Lauther and Melissa A. Hughes; and four great-grandchildren, Jenna, Nicholas, Conner and Kyra. Deceased are a daughter, Elizabeth Ann Williams; two brothers, Carl and William Lauther; and two sisters, Geraldine Post and JoAnn Jarosz. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and from Noon to 2:30 p.m., the hour of service, Friday, October 9th, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded graveside by Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion.
