Leonard Joseph Sanpietro, 88, of Washington, died Tuesday, March 3, 2009, in his residence.
He was born June 13, 1920, in Berdine, a son of Sam and Mary Luchese Sanpietro.
Mr. Sanpietro graduated from Washington High School.
He was inducted into the United States Army on October 30, 1941, and served until his honorable discharge on November 23, 1945, with a rank of Staff Sergeant. Mr. Sanpietro saw action in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. For his service, he was awarded a Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, American Theater Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with 5 bronze battle stars.
For 36 years, he owned and operated Len’s Restaurant in Washington and later worked at Sears for 9 years.
Mr. Sanpietro was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, the VFW, Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion, and Knights of Columbus, where he was past grand knight.
On December 22, 1970, he married Nancy Kelsey Livingston, who survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Timothy (Kym) Livingston of Havertown and Riley (Nancy) Livingston of Carlisle; three sisters, Genevieve Russell of Hickory, Mary Nice of Elyria, Ohio, and Kathryn Rush of Washington; two grandchildren, Jered and Jessie; and several nieces and nephews.
He also leaves behind his dog, Corky.
Deceased are a brother, Frank Sanpietro, and a sister, Josephine Metz.
Friends will be received 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where a blessing service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 6th with Father Nicholas Spirko officiating. Entombment will follow in Washington Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded by Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion.
