Grayson Plants, 74, of Washington, died Friday, February 27, 2009. He was born January 15, 1935, in Claysville, a son of George W. Sr. and Mildred Hancher Plants. Mr. Plants was a member of Living Waters Church of God. He enjoyed a close relationship with his church and church family. He worked as a welder for Pipeliners Union, Local 798. Mr. Plants belonged to Claysville and Washington senior citizens centers as well as U.A. He was a graduate of Claysville High School and was a qualified electronics technician. Mr. Plants served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He was a gentle and kind man with a love of simple pleasures like gardening, farm life and his motorcycle rides. He was a hard-working man who received much pleasure from seeing a job well done. He was a joy to everyone and loved his children as much as they loved him. His laughter came easy, along with a great sense of humor and his self-made “vocabulary.” The family celebrates his life and the memories they will forever hold dear. On June 22, 1957, he married Betty Ann Sprowls, who died June 24, 1985. Surviving are two sons, Mark A. (Donna) Plants of Augusta, Ga., and Jay Michael (Susan) Plants of Claysville; two daughters, Cassandra J. (Jeffrey) Gray of Palm Bay, Fla., and Melinda A. (Patrick) Heatley of Washington; four brothers, George “G.W.” Plants Jr. of Claysville, Julian Plants of Washington and Rudy and David Plants, both of Avella; two sisters, Mildred Moore of Claysville and Patty Plants of Avella; eight grandchildren, Rob and Lorri Baker, Taylor and Carson Gray, Sean, Christopher and Rachel Heatley and Cody Miller; two great-grandchildren, Lauren Baker and Anthony Dakota Brown; and his companion, Twila JoAnn Knotts. In addition to his wife, deceased are five brothers, Duane, Gerald, Larry, Gaylord and Roger Plants.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. Additional visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, in Roadside Chapel, Claysville, where services will immediately follow with the Rev. Michael Singo, the Rev. Mary Sprowls and the Rev. George W. Plants Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Grove Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded graveside by American Legion James R. Hunt Post 639.
