William Hundertmark, 91, of Washington, died Tuesday, March 17, 2009, in the Washington Hospital.
He was born September 8, 1917, in Washington, a son of Otto Ernest and Clotilde Sitler Hundertmark.
During World War II, Mr. Hundertmark served in the United States Army from December 7, 1942, until his honorable discharge on October 23, 1945, with a rank of Staff Sergeant. He was involved in combat in Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Southern France, Rhineland and Central Europe, and was wounded in action in Italy on February 11, 1944, and in France on December 1, 1944. His awards include a Good Conduct Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Ribbon with Bronze Arrowhead, Combat Infantryman Badge, and a Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster. On the day of his discharge, he re-enlisted in the Army and served until his second honorable discharge on October 22, 1948.
Mr. Hundertmark retired from Brockway Glass after 43 years of service.
He was an avid reader and, during his retirement, spent many days at the library. Mr. Hundertmark also enjoyed solving crossword puzzles and watching Major League Baseball.
He was a member of Holy Trinity National Catholic Church.
On November 20, 1948, he married Irene Magdon, who died December 2, 2002. They had celebrated more than 50 years of marriage.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews, including David Sienkiel, his caregiver; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
Deceased are four brothers, Otto Jr., John Louis, Paul E., and Helmuth Hundertmark; and seven sisters, Helena McGhie, Pauline Endres, Louise Gibala, Johanna Dechert, Ruth Mintun, Clotilde Kratz and Esther Davis.
Friends will be received 5 to 7 p.m. Friday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where a blessing service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 21st, with Bishop John Mack officiating. Burial will follow in Holy Trinity Church Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded graveside by Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion.
