Albert F. Devenney, Sr., 90, of Washington, passed away peacefully, Sunday, November 22, 2009, at the home of his son, following a brief illness.
He was born September 7, 1919, a son of the late William and Martha Devenney.
Mr. Devenney was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His life was dedicated to his family and his country. He served his country during World War II as a member of the Army�s 103rd Infantry Division stationed in Germany, Austria, Italy and France. He proudly recounted stories of this time and met for reunions with the remaining members of Company D every September until his illness this year. Mr. Devenney was instrumental in researching and collecting news articles, pictures and documents that related to World War II. He loved to share these with others and displayed his pictures of WWII cemeteries at Citizens� Library on Memorial Day. He was fervent about flying the American flag so others would not forget what so many lost their lives fighting for.
Mr. Devenney worked at J & L Steel in Aliquippa for 36 years.
After retiring, he dedicated his time to following his granddaughters and later their children in all their endeavors. With his son, he enjoyed trips out west to the buffalo country, visited the WWII Monument in Washington D.C. and the 103rd Infantry, Company D. Monument in Gainesville, Texas, as well as the WWII Museum in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Mr. Devenney was a life member of Edwin Scott Linton American Legion Post 175 and enjoyed photography.
Deceased are his loving wife, Anna Hilke Devenney; a son who died at birth; two sisters, Francis Eassey and Edna Clutter; and five brothers, William, Raymond, Kenneth, Paul and Melvin.
Surviving are his devoted son, Albert F. Devenney, Jr.; daughter, Priscilla �Pat� (David) Hathaway; loving granddaughters, Kimberly (George) Kemper and Patricia (Tim) Grzegorczyk; four great-grandchildren, Tanner and Anna Grzegorczyk and Hannah and Hayden Kemper; and two step great-grandchildren, Brian and Brett Kemper.
Friends will be received Tuesday from 5 to 9 p.m. in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 25th. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded graveside by Edwin Scott Linton American Legion Post 175. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor�s choice.
