Bernard L. Howard

Bernard L. Howard, known to many as Ben, passed away peacefully at home on September 17, 2026, at the age of 78.

Ben will be remembered as a giving, nurturing man who was well loved by everyone who knew him. He was an amazing father who steadfastly supported his daughter, and he lived his life with a deep sense of devotion to the people he loved. Those closest to him knew him as someone who put his family before himself, offering steady care, kindness, and strength in ways that shaped the lives around him.

A dedicated worker, Ben spent more than 30 years serving at Western Center State Hospital and later at Mayview State Hospital, working in the Maintenance and Housekeeping departments. His long career reflected the same reliability and quiet commitment that marked every part of his life.

Among the most meaningful chapters of Ben’s life was the loving care he gave to his wife, Kathleen Wise Howard. Married on July 30, 1977, they shared many years together until her passing on December 19, 2019. For more than 20 years, Ben sacrificed everything to care for Kathleen as she lived with multiple sclerosis, a reflection of his extraordinary loyalty, compassion, and enduring love.

He also found happiness in reconnecting with his fiancé, Franny Boucher, after knowing her many years ago. Their renewed bond brought many happy times and companionship into his life. Ben enjoyed simple and treasured moments as well, including fishing with his son-in-law, Jon Fish, times that will be warmly remembered.

Ben is survived by his daughter, Shannon Fish, and his son-in-law, Jon Fish. He is also survived by his fiancé, Franny Boucher, whose companionship brought joy to his later years, and by Isabelle, his beloved dog and companion, who shared in his daily life.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen Wise Howard, and by his mother, Mildred Pollock.

Ben’s life was defined by love, sacrifice, hard work, and care for others. He leaves behind the memory of a man whose generosity and devotion were felt deeply and will not be forgotten.

As per Ben's wishes there will be no funeral services.  All arrangements are entrusted to the William G. Neal Funeral Home 925 Allison Ave. Washington PA 15301.
