Carl M. Johnson, of Washington, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully with family by his side on October 21, 2026. He was born on September 15, 1928, in Altoona, Pennsylvania.

Carl was a graduate of Altoona High School and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from Hiram College. He honorably served in the United States Army, and later built a career in insurance, working at Proudfit Insurance Agency and retiring as an insurance underwriter.

He was a quiet, reserved, calm, and kind man whose life was centered on the people he loved most. His proudest accomplishment was his family, and he showed that devotion in countless ways. He put his children through college and was the rock of the family, always putting his family first. He met his wife at Bishop and Babcock in Cleveland, Ohio, and was smitten as soon as he saw her, beginning a love story that would span nearly seven decades.

Carl found joy in simple and meaningful pursuits. He enjoyed woodworking with his son, as well as photography, painting, and handyman projects around the house. Family vacations were especially dear to him, and he loved stopping at relatives’ homes along the way and visiting historical places. He made good use of his Rand McNally map book from AAA, studying it carefully as part of the journey. He also shared happy times with his wife attending Shakespearean festivals in Lake Niagara.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Theresa Johnson, whom he married on October 4, 1958, and with whom he recently celebrated 68 years of marriage. He is also survived by his daughter, Pamela Stepnowski and her husband, John, and by his son, Craig Johnson and his wife, Donna. Carl’s love also lives on in his grandchildren, Maggie, Ben, Joe, Maria, Robert, Marc, Grace, Bella, and Luke, each of whom was part of the family he cherished so deeply.

He was preceded in death by his father, Gustove Johnson, and his mother, Bernice (Albright) Johnson.
