Doris Ann Sorice

May 1, 1930 — March 25, 2026

Washington

With great sorrow, we announce the passing of Doris (Pettit) Sorice on March 25, 2026, at the age of 95.

She was born on May 1, 1930, in Washington, at the height of the Great Depression.

Doris’s entire childhood was spent living on Donnan Avenue, with her two sisters and parents. Fond memories were formed in that neighborhood and the schools she attended including Seventh Ward Elementary and Washington High School.

It was at high school, where she was a majorette, that she met the senior class president and her future husband. They graduated in 1948, married in 1953, and eventually had four children.

Doris was a devoted mother and wife. She loved to cook meals and bake desserts for her family. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, reading, playing cards with her “club,” visiting her sisters, and spending weeks at the beach.

She was a faithful member of First Christian Church where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, played bells, and participated in Christian Women’s Fellowship. Fairhill Manor Church is where she worshipped during her last 20 years.

Doris did administrative work for the Visiting Nurses Association and for several local medical practices. She retired from Dr. John McCabe’s practice in 1995.

Her husband of 65 years, Michael A. Sorice, died in 2018.

Doris was also predeceased by her parents, Walter and Helen (Nesbitt) Pettit, and her sisters, June (Pettit) Turley, and Nancy (Pettit) Turek.

She is survived by her four children, Richard (Iris) Sorice, Ruth Ann (Sorice) Fenton, Janet Sorice (Dan) Foss, and Judy Sorice Harris; eight grandchildren, Nicole Sorice, Dylan (Abigail) Fenton, Hallie Fenton, Caley Harris, Keara Brown, Shawn Brown, Ian Harris, Emily Harris; and eight great-grandchildren, Frances, Hazel, Arthur, Miles, Elliot, Olive, Aliyah, and Arlo.

Friends and family will be received from 12 to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 29, 2026, in William G. Neal Funeral Service, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where a funeral service will take place at 12:30 p.m. Monday, March 30, 2026. Interment will follow at Washington Cemetery.
