It is with heavy hearts that the family of Gary A. Naeser announce his passing on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, after a valiant fight with Parkinson’s. He was born on August 2, 1951, in Pittsburgh to the late Ruth and Curt Naeser.
Gary graduated from Peters Township High School in 1969 and subsequently attended California State College, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in science and postgraduate work in the physical sciences. He began his career teaching earth science and coaching football in Manassas, VA. He loved teaching, but most of all sharing his knowledge of the universe with his students. In addition, he had a great passion for building things. Upon leaving the teaching field, he began a construction company with family specializing in log homes. Gary continued his career in construction by forming his own company, Good Intent Custom Builders, until 2017. His craftmanship in log and timber frame homes is visible throughout the tri-state area. An avid downhill skier for 50 years, he cherished each snowfall and his trips to the slopes.
Community service held a special place in Gary’s heart. He served as President of the Washington County Builders Association (WCBA) in 1993 and 2005. For his community service, he was awarded the WCBA Service Award in1996 and the Pennsylvania Small Contractor of the Year in 1999. Additionally, he was chair of the Pennsylvania Builders Trust and committee member of the National Home Builders Association from 1999-2010. Gary was especially proud of serving as President of the Washington County Historical Society and the many projects they undertook to protect and maintain our city and county’s prominent history.
A cradle Episcopal, he was a member of Saint Thomas Episcopal Church in Canonsburg where Gary will be remembered for his kindness and dedicated service to the church.
A caring and gentle man, Gary loved his girls, Jo, Nikki, Nora, and Emma. He is survived by his wife of 49 years JoAnn Rodriguez-Naeser, daughter, Nicole Modesitt (Scott) and granddaughters Emma, Nora of Arlington, VA., brother Peter Naeser (Linda), sister Ruth DeWitt, brothers-in-law Julio (Jane), James Rodriguez (Susan), and many nieces (especially Jess) and nephews.
We are so thankful for our friends, Don, Sue and Bernie who supported us throughout Gary’s illness. Special thanks to the nurses (especially Amanda, Destiny) and the aides (Cara) at OSPTA Hospice for their care, support, and compassion.
Family and friends will be received on Friday, April 17th from 1 to 6 p.m. with departing prayers beginning at 6 p.m. at the William Neal Funeral Home, 95 Allison Ave., Washington, PA. A Christian Service will take place on Saturday, April 18th at 10:00a.m. at Saint Thomas Episcopal Church, 139 North Jefferson Ave., Canonsburg, PA.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to: Parkinson Foundation of Western PA 850 Cranberry Woods Drive, Suite 2222, Cranberry Township, PA 16066 (412)-837-2542.
