Harry Elmer Murray

    Harry E. "Knute" Murray 7/6/27  -  7/20/18   Harry Elmer "Knute" Murray, 91, passed away on Friday, July 20, 2018, at Wesley Commons Nursing Home in Greenwood, SC.  Harry was born in Washington,  on July 6, 1927, a son of the late Harry Dean Murray and Margaret Naser Murray.     He graduated from Washington High School in 1946, and immediately enlisted in the United States Coast Guard, where he served until he was honorably discharged in 1948.     Harry enjoyed boxing, and in 1950 was the Golden Gloves Heavyweight Champion for Charleston, WV.   He graduated from the University of Charleston in West Virginia, with a Bachelor of Arts degree.  He began his teaching career at Chartier’s Houston High School in Washington County, Pa., and then took a teaching position at Washington High School, where he taught for 32 years.     On February 12, 1955, he married Lucile Lowry, who survives.  They were married 63 years.   He and his wife, Lucile, moved to Ninety Six, South Carolina in 2001 where they enjoyed their retirement years.  Harry was fond of gardening and painting.  He loved spending time with all of his animals including an orphan deer he took care of for many years.  He dearly loved his family and his wife Lucile.    Also surviving are two sons, David H. (Penny) Murray of Carnegie, Pa., and John H. (Charlotte) Murray of Ninety Six, SC; one daughter, Ann E. (Clay) Oliphant of Austin, Tx; seven grandchildren, Amanda Hughes, Candee Cugini, Jonathan Murray, Trevor Murray, Ashley Oliphant, Mack Oliphant, and John Parker Murray; and three great grandchildren, Jacob Hughes, Carlee Hughes, and Alayna Cugini.     Friends will be received on Thursday, July 26th, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, Pa., where services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 27th.  Burial will follow at Washington Cemetery, 498 Park Avenue, Washington, Pa.   Military Rites accorded graveside by the Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion.Memorial contributions may be made to www.CarryTheLoad.org or www.Give.cru.org (0861867).  Additional information and guestbook are available on line at www.NealFuneralHome.com.
