James Francis Hemelrick, born on December 8, 1936, in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on February 27, 2026, in Washington, Pennsylvania. He lived a life filled with dedication, both to his career and family, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and compassion.
James was a committed truck driver, having worked for notable companies such as International Cold Storage, CRST, and Overnight Transportation. His professional life reflected his business-oriented nature, underpinned by a strong work ethic. A graduate of Washington High School, he went on to join the United States Air Force shortly after high school in 1955, serving honorably until his discharge in 1965.
Beyond his career, James had a passion for farming. He loved caring for and raising beef cattle, hogs, and other farm animals, reflecting his deep connection to the land. He cherished the time spent farming.
James is survived by his children: Brenda Hanning, Joann (Larry Selman) Hemelrick, James (Patti) Hemelrick, Jay Hemelrick, Christopher (Andrea) Hemelrick, and Catherine (Christopher) Bushnell. His family continued with grandchildren Stephanie, Christopher, Jaymie, Yasmine, Victoria, Audra, Derek, Abigail, and “CJ.” He also took great pride in being a great-grandfather to Paisley.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Opal (Powell) Hemelrick, his devoted wife Betty Jane (Peebles) Hemelrick, son Jan Hemelrick, grandson “R.D.” Hanning, and son-in-law Randy Hanning.
James Francis Hemelrick will be remembered for his quiet demeanor, and his steadfast commitment to his work. His life was marked by a genuine care for those around him, and while he may be gone, his memory will live on in the hearts of his family and all who had the privilege to know him.
He will be laid to rest privately at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies. All funeral arrangements are entrusted to the William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Ave. Washington PA 15301
