James R. Mihal, a man known for his larger-than-life personality, unwavering work ethic, and deep devotion to family, passed away peacefully on June 6, 2026, in Washington, Pennsylvania. Born on December 12, 1943, in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, James lived a full life marked by dedication, humor, and service.
A proud graduate of McKeesport High School’s Class of 1961, Jim embarked on his journey immediately after graduation by joining the United States Air Force. Serving as a mechanic for fighter jets, he demonstrated both skill and commitment, culminating in an honorable discharge with the rank of Staff Sergeant. His time in the military was a formative chapter, reflecting his disciplined nature and dedication to his country.
Following his military service, Jim devoted 40 years to Consol Energy, where he worked diligently as a Coal Mine Maintenance Foreman. His hard work and leadership left an indelible mark on his colleagues and the industry. Those who worked alongside him in the coal mines affectionately nicknamed him "Scooby," a testament to the camaraderie and respect he earned over the years.
Jim was known not only for his professional achievements but also for his unique and endearing quirks. Despite a hearing impairment that led him to speak loudly, his voice was always filled with warmth and humor. Family and friends fondly recall his booming “bomb-like” "Farts" and the playful, homemade language he sometimes spoke—both part of a jokester’s charm that brought joy to many. His spirit was as hearty as his laughter, making him a beloved figure among those privileged to know him.
His passions went beyond work and humor. Jim loved grilling, spending cherished time with family, tending to his lawn, and plowing snow. His helpful nature extended to neighbors, demonstrating his generous heart and community spirit. Above all, Jim took immense pride in his family, whom he considered his greatest accomplishment.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Sandie (Furin) Mihal, to whom he was married on December 16, 1965. Their enduring partnership stands as a testament to mutual love and respect. He is also survived by his children: Stephanie (Chuck) Smith, Tim (Kari) Mihal, and Jason (Jennifer) Mihal. His legacy lives on through his grandchildren Cearra, Garrett, Gabriel, and Koleman Mihal, each carrying forward the values he instilled. Among his dear friends who stood by his side were Cowboy, Ralph, Marc, Chuck M., Big Chuck, and Helen—companions who shared in the laughter and strength of a remarkable life.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary (Mac) Mihal; his brothers, Bobby, Johnny, and Teddy Mihal; and his sister, Judy (Mihal) Parker. Their memory remains embedded in the fabric of his life story.
James R. Mihal’s life was a testament to hard work, love, humor, and service. His larger-than-life presence leaves an indelible impression on his family, friends, and community. He will be deeply missed, remembered always for the joy he spread, the tireless effort he gave, and the love he shared.
A celebration of Jim’s life will honor his memory on Saturday June 13, 2026 from 12PM to 1PM when a funeral service will take place with full military honors at the William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Ave Washington PA. His family asks that remembrances be directed to the Wounded Warrior Project. www.woundedwarriorproject.org In remembering James R.
