Jilldous Charles Hilty, lovingly known as JC, passed away on October 30, 2026, at the age of 96. Born on December 27, 1929, he lived a long life marked by devotion to his family, pride in his work, and a warm, friendly spirit that left a lasting impression on those who knew him.

JC was a graduate of Penn Township High School, Class of 1949. During the Korean War, he joined the United States Army, went overseas, and had boots on the ground while serving in the Infantry 2nd Division. He was honorably discharged in 1953, and he remained very proud of his military service throughout his life.

He was also deeply proud of the work he did in civilian life. JC spent more than 50 years as a bus driver and retired from Suburban Transit. Driving the bus was one of his proudest accomplishments, and it reflected so much of who he was: hardworking, dependable, social, and friendly.

JC carried a joyful enthusiasm into the things he loved. He was on a first-name basis with some of the Pittsburgh Penguins and took special delight in collecting autographs for his family. One favorite story tells of the day he asked Syd Crosby whether he could have Mario Lemieux sign a picture for him. He handed Syd the picture along with a self-addressed envelope, and sure enough, it was mailed back with Mario’s signature on it. It was the kind of story that captured JC’s warmth, persistence, and the pleasure he found in doing something special for the people he loved.

Above all, JC will be remembered for the life he built with his beloved wife, Lucille Hilty. They were married on July 2, 1955, and celebrated 71 years of marriage, a remarkable testament to enduring love and partnership. Together they created a family that became his greatest pride and joy.

He is also survived his daughters, Cheryl Ann Hilty (Dave Bulford), Linda Breth (Frank Toomey), Mary Kay Hilty; and by his son, David (Beth) Hilty. He also leaves behind grandchildren who brought much happiness to his life: Donald (Katie) Breth, Tyler (Vita) Breth, Kristen (Cody), Kelley, Kris Engel, Courtney (Ryan) Ward, Jonathan Hilty, and Elliana Hilty. His legacy continues as well in his great-grandchildren, Walker, Georgia, Jack, and June, each of whom was part of the family he cherished so deeply.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Otis and Inez (Beanner) Hilty, and by his brothers, Otis (Betty)Hilty and Gilbert (Charlotte) Hilty.

JC’s life was one of service, loyalty, and love. He will be remembered as a proud veteran, a dedicated bus driver, a friendly and social presence, and most of all, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
