Karen Elizabeth Halligan, 74, of Washington, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at Washington Hospital.
Born April 15, 1952, in New Kensington, she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Sarah Evelyn Williams Kassouf. Karen was a 1970 graduate of Springdale High School and went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in education from Slippery Rock College.
Karen dedicated much of her life to caring for others. She worked as a clerk at Jim’s Stop and Shop from 1996 until her retirement in 2018 and also served as an early education teacher at the YWCA of Washington.
A devoted member of Trinity Church, Karen was Anglican by faith and found great joy in her spiritual life. She enjoyed reading, word searches, crossword puzzles, trips to the beach, and, in her younger years, bowling.
On December 20, 1975, she married her beloved husband, Stephen J. Halligan, with whom she shared over 50 years of marriage.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Kurt (Jamie) Halligan, Patrick Halligan, and Amanda (Brad) McNary; daughters-in-law, Tanya Halligan and Desiree Morrell; grandchildren, Tanner Halligan, Bella Morrell, Zandar Halligan, Leah Hartsell, Sydney (Riley) Gilliland, Trevor Bilak-Sackin, Leah (Bralynd) Russell, Sierra Joseph, Aidan Halligan, Quinn Halligan, and Liv Halligan; and great-grandchildren, Beau and Colter Russell.
She was preceded in death by her loving son, Jeremy Brett Halligan.
Family and friends are invited to a memorial gathering on Monday, June 29, 2026, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Trinity Church, 550 S. Main Street, Washington. A service will be held at the church on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at 1 p.m., officiated by Rev. Canon Tracey Russell and Rev. Jamey Russell.
