Karen Sworden, a cherished educator, devoted mother, and loving grandmother, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2026, in her hometown of Washington, Pennsylvania. Born on September 19, 1948, in Washington, Karen’s life was marked by compassion, generosity, and a boundless love for those around her.
From an early age, Karen showed a profound dedication to learning and teaching. A proud graduate of Trinity High School's Class of 1966, she went on to earn her Bachelor of Arts in Education from California University of Pennsylvania. Her passion for education blossomed into a remarkable 33-year career with the Trinity School District, where she served as an elementary and middle school teacher. Karen’s innovative spirit shone brightly as she taught the Science Discovery Lab, earning her the distinguished Teacher of the Year award—a testament to her tireless commitment to inspiring young minds.
Karen’s warmth extended far beyond the classroom. She was known for her compassionate heart, always making others feel at ease with her kind and caring presence. Her family home reflected this nurturing spirit, especially in the vibrant flower gardens she so lovingly tended. A talented artist and seamstress, Karen also owned and operated "YouNique Embroidery," sharing her creativity with the community.
Her deepest joys, however, were found in her family. She met her husband, Frank Sworden, at the Union Grill, and their union on May 11, 1979, stood as a pillar of love and partnership throughout her life. Together, they raised two wonderful children: Nicholas (Jeni) Sworden and Trissa (Tim Jr.) Hoover. Karen’s role as a mother and grandmother was one she embraced wholeheartedly. She never missed a football game in 22 years while her son played or while her husband coached football for Washington and Jefferson College and McGuffey High School, a devotion that spoke volumes about her supportive character.
Karen’s treasured summers were often filled with simple yet meaningful adventures, such as digging for quartz crystals and fossils alongside her daughter in New York—moments that brought endless joy and lifelong memories.
She is survived by her devoted husband Frank; her children, Nicholas and Jeni Sworden and Trissa and Tim Hoover; her beloved granddaughters, Ava and Faith Sworden and Maggie and Evelyn Hoover; and her brothers, Dane (Diane) Ward and Don (Tracy) Ward. Karen was preceded in death by her parents, Glenn and Helen (Wright) Ward.
Surrounded by her loving family in her final moments, Karen’s legacy of kindness, dedication, and creativity will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her life was a testament to the power of love and the lasting impact one person can have on their community and family.
Karen Sworden will forever be remembered not just for the knowledge she imparted, but for the heartfelt care with which she touched every life she encountered. She rests now, a beacon of warmth and grace, deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
