Lois Lee Cowden

Lois Lee Cowden, 91, of Avella, Hopewell Township, died December 13, 2021, in The Washington Hospital. She was born July 28, 1930, in Cross Creek, a daughter of Lester and Florence Lee. Mrs. Cowden attended Cross Creek Presbyterian Church in her youth, and graduated from Hickory High School in 1948. She drove a school bus in the Avella School District for 29 years, was an auditor for Hopewell Township for many years, and volunteered her time with Domestic Violence Services. Mrs. Cowden also served as a den mother for Boy Scouts. She was active in Upper Buffalo Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday School, Buffalo Homemakers, Washington County Cattlemen’s Association, and the Washington County Fair. On August 20, 1947, she married Robert R. Cowden, who died September 16, 2004. Surviving are a daughter, Leslie Danley (Steve) of Wellsburg, West Virginia; three grandchildren, Tim (Tiffany) Danley of Houston, Bob Cowden of Bridgeville, and Beth Ann (Sean) Yargus of Texas; four great-grandchildren, Kaiden, Chloe, Sophie, and Jake; a sister, Jean Russell of Arizona; cousin, Eileen Brown of Pittsburgh; sister-in-law, Florence Mastellar; and friend, Lester Rice. Deceased, in addition to her husband and parents, are two sons, Rodney and Kenneth Cowden; a grandson, Josh Miller; brothers, James Lee and Harry Lee; sisters, Ann Sullivan and Mary Gresser; and sister-in-law, Nova Jones. Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m., Monday, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, December 21st, with Rev. Ben Scott officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Hickory. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Shriner’s Hospital for Children, Attn: Processing Center, PO Box 947765, Atlanta, GA 30394.
