Melvin L. Cummins

November 19, 1937 — December 14, 2025

Washington

Melvin L. Cummins, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on December 14, 2025, at the age of 88, in Washington, Pennsylvania. Born on November 19, 1937, in Prosperity, Pennsylvania, Melvin led a life marked by hard work, dedication, and a profound sense of humor that endeared him to all who knew him.

A man of many trades, Melvin's career spanned diverse endeavors, from his early days as a dairy farmer to significant roles at Hazel Atlas Glass, Agway, and the Greenbriar Treatment Center. Each venture reflected not only his industrious spirit but also his unwavering commitment to hard work.

Melvin's life was enriched by his deep love for family. He met the love of his life, Leota "Tiny" (Brownlee) Cummins, on a blind date, and they married on June 7, 1959. Together they built a family that thrived under the nurturing love and guidance he provided. He is survived by his devoted wife, Leota, and their three loving children: Daniel (Cheryl) Cummins, Laura (William) Hilverding, and Harlan (Jill) Cummins. The legacy of Melvin's love extends further through his grandchildren, Mitchell, Rachel, Jennifer, Jeremy, Noell, and Sean, and into the hearts of his nine great-grandchildren.

Beyond his professional achievements, Melvin was a man of personal triumphs. He celebrated his proudest accomplishment of 41 years of sobriety as a dedicated member of Alcoholics Anonymous, a testament to his strength and resilience.  Melvin was a man who always wanted to stay informed about the happenings of his sons and family, possessing an insatiable curiosity.

In his leisure, Melvin found joy in the simplicity of life, whether it was through hunting, fishing, camping, tending to his garden or watching the Steelers and Pirates.

Melvin is also survived by his dear sister, Goldie (the late Barney) Barnhart, along with many nieces and nephews. He joins in eternal rest his infant daughter, his cherished parents, Leroy and Stella (Chadwick) Cummins, and sister Jane Pigford who await him in peace.
