Richard Wayne Cumer, 86, of Canonsburg, died Saturday, October 13, 2018, in his home. He was born November 19, 1931, in Washington, a son of the late Alexander Joseph Cumer and Edith Mae Perrine Cumer. Mr. Cumer was a member of the Houston American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, and was an avid football fan. A highly decorated veteran, Mr. Cumer served in both the U.S. Marines and Air Force. He served in the Marines from January 22, 1951, until his honorable discharge January 21, 1954, as a sergeant. He was a tank mechanic and was awarded a National Defense Service Medal. On December 19, 1958, he joined the Air Force, serving for the next 21 years and 2 months as an aircraft maintenance superintendent. He was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Force Longevity Service Award with four Oak Leaf Clusters, NCO Professional Military Education Graduate Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, and Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with one Oak Leaf Cluster. Mr. Cumer was honorably retired from the Air Force February 29, 1980, with a rank of senior master sergeant. Surviving are his wife, Cody Hanson Cumer; a son, Seth (Tera) Cumer, of the state of California; a daughter Robin Cumer of Illinois; three stepdaughters, Shawna Duerr of Columbus, Ohio, Dana (Richard) Herman of McKees Rocks and Amy (Bruce) Volstad of Pittsburgh; four brothers, Kenneth, Alex, Raymond and Gerald; three sisters, Ruth Ann, Betty and Helen; nine grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Deceased is a brother, William. Mr. Cumer was provided with great care and support by his hospice nurse, Judy, and his family. At the request of the deceased, all services were private.
