Richard F. Phillips

Richard F. Phillips, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2026, at the age of 85, in Washington, Pennsylvania, surrounded by his loving family. Born on December 28, 1940, in Niagara Falls, New York, Richard dedicated his life to both his family and his career, leaving behind a legacy of love and laughter.

Richard’s professional journey began after he obtained an Associate Degree from Niagara Falls Community College, followed by a Bachelors in Education from the University of New York. He continued to pursue his academic inclinations, earning a Masters of Science in Counseling from Nova University, as well as a Masters of Arts in Supervision and Administration from the University of Florida. His commitment to education allowed him to serve the community through his work at Charlotte County School District, where he retired after more than 30 years.  And later worked at Mercy Behavioral Health in Pittsburgh. 

An individual proud of his service, Richard dedicated four years to the United States Air Force and further devoted twenty-five years to the United States Army Reserves, retiring at the rank of Major. His patriotic spirit was matched only by his deep affection for his family. He was a member of the Edward Scott Linton American Legon Post 175 Washington PA

Richard married Sandy (McCurry) Phillips on June 22, 1985, and they celebrated forty wonderful years together. He was a loving husband, known for telling Sandy she was beautiful every single day. As a father, he cherished moments spent with his daughters, Ashley and Kaitlin, particularly enjoying watching Steelers and Penguins games together. His joy was amplified by the laughter of his granddaughters, Natalie and Chloe, with whom he relished summer days swimming and enjoying popsicles. Richard also took pride in teachings of home renovations, sharing his knowledge about tools with Kaitlin.

In addition to his family devotion, Richard embraced a variety of hobbies. He was an enthusiastic woodworker, a coin collector, and he enjoyed golfing, camping, and gardening. Many will remember him napping in the sun alongside the family cats.

Throughout his life, Richard was characterized by his patience, caring nature, and a unique ability to make others laugh. He possessed a stoic demeanor but revealed his warmth through the bonds he nurtured with his loved ones.

He is survived by his wife, Sandy (McCurry); daughters, Ashley and Kaitlin Phillips; sons, Mark, Ken, and Kurt Phillips; and granddaughters, Natalie and Chloe Phillips. He was preceded in death by his son, Paul David Phillips; brothers, Paul and Donald Phillips; sister, Geraldine; and parents, Paul and Marguerite (Walker) Phillips.

Richard F. Phillips will be remembered for his unwavering love and devotion to his family, his many accomplishments, and the joyous memories he created and inspired. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him, as they carry forward the laughter and love that defined his remarkable life.

Friends and family will be received from 10AM to 1PM., Thursday January 8, 2026 at the William G. Neal Funeral Washington PA, where services will be held at 1PM. Interment will follow at the Washington Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the Edwin Scott Linton American Legion Post #175 and the United States Army.
