Sgt. Robert Lee Matteson, Sr., BA, 74, of Washington, died June 16, 2022, in his home. He was born March 9, 1948, in Washington, the son of the late Florence Marie Matteson Irey and stepson of the late Raymond Irey. Robert was a 1966 graduate of Trinity High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in 1992, from Washington & Jefferson College, in Business Management. He retired from Samson Glass & Mirror where he was a glass glazier. Sgt. Matteson proudly served his country in the USMC. He was awarded the Purple Heart with a Gold Star; Combat Action Ribbon; Presidential Unit Citation with ribbon bar; Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze stars; Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation (Gallantry Cross color); Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation (Civil Actions color, 1st Class); Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Rifle Marksman Badge. He was a lifetime member of the Military Order of Purple Hearts and Disabled American Veterans. He loved trains of all types and decorating for Christmas. He was a member of Friendship Community Church. On June 28, 1969, Robert married Joyce Darlene Boardley, who survives. They were married for nearly 53 years. Also surviving are sons, Robert Lee Matteson, Jr. (Marcy) and Brian Matteson (Melissa); daughter, Heather Smith (Michael); brothers, Raymond Irey, Jr. (Wendy), James Irey, and Donald Irey (Lisa); sisters, Anna Przystup (the late Frank), and Kathy Hall (Dewey); eleven grandchildren, Jasmine Barthel (David), Kayla Austin (Trever), Lyndsey Matteson, B.J. Davies (Kimi), Christopher Davies, Marissa Watkins (Cory), Scott Matteson, Bradley Matteson, Megan Diamond (Jesse), Aimee Smith, and Brett Smith; 13 great-grandchildren, Brooklyn Ingram, Karis Ingram, Raymond Ingram, ReMay Ingram, Zander Duchess, Zayden Duchess, Maria Davies, Elora Davies, Bobby Davies, Jackson Barthel, Alayna Austin, Aaliyah Austin, and Brooklynn Austin; and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends and family will be received Wednesday, June 22, and Thursday, June 23, 2022, 2-4pm and 6-8pm, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where a funeral service will be held Friday, June 24, at 11am. Interment to follow in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies. Military Honors will be accorded by the USMC and American Legion Post 175.
