Ron Todd, a dedicated educator and esteemed coach, passed away on August 22, 2025, while doing what he loved most: engaging with the world of sports. He was a fixture in the Washington community, where he made a profound impact on countless students and athletes throughout his career.
A graduate of Canon Mac High School and a proud alumnus of Grand Canyon University, where he obtained two Master's degrees, Ron’s commitment to education was unparalleled. He began his teaching journey at Washington Middle School, where he inspired young minds as a teacher. His passion for athletics saw him take on multiple roles, including Head Coach of the Washington Middle School Football Team and the Assistant Varsity Coach for both the Washington High School Football and Baseball teams and head Coach of the Washington High School Bocce Team. His notable achievements included leading the Washington High School Varsity Football Team to a PA State Championship in 2001 and a WPIAL Championship in 2017, milestones that underscored his exceptional coaching abilities.
Ron was not only a mentor in the classroom and on the field, but he was also a beloved figure in the community. He shared his love for all sports and embodied the spirit of hard work, kindness, and inspiration. Known for his exceptional teaching skills, he was described as amazing and motivational by those who had the privilege of learning from him. Even beyond the realm of academics and athletics, he found joy working as a cook at the Wild Things Stadium, filling each role he held with enthusiasm and passion. He was a teacher and Counselor at Southwood Behavioral Health mentoring and educating the kids.
An avid sports enthusiast, Ron looked forward to participating in the Claysville American Legion Golf Trip in Canton, Ohio, which became a cherished tradition for him. He began his coaching career at the age of 18, a testament to his lifelong dedication to mentoring the youth.
Ron is survived by his loving wife, Jill Todd; his father, Ricky Burnfield; his brothers, Derrick Burnfield, Robb (Joe) Todd, and Dan Todd; his sister, Alyssa Todd; and his brother and sister-in-law, Jack (Jami) Holmes and Ruth Holmes (Mother-in-law). He is also remembered fondly by his nieces and nephews, Brooke Burnfield, Brycen Burnfield, Kayla (Jacob) Brownlee, Jessica Holmes, Ty Todd, Gary Todd, Sarah Todd, Alexa Jolly, and Lindi Ray Jolly.
Ron was preceded in death by his brother, South Strabane Police Officer Nathan Burnfield, and his mother, Debra Kosey Burnfield.
Ron leaves his cherished dogs, Buster and Brie, who were his loyal companions, Ron also leaves behind a legacy defined by unwavering commitment to sports, education, and community. His life serves as a beacon for those who strive to inspire and uplift the lives of others. Ron will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
