Scott Andrew Garet, 26, of Washington, passed away peacefully at home on December 20, 2011, surrounded by his family and illuminated by the bright lights of his favorite Christmas decorations.
He was born March 12, 1985, in Washington, a son of James and Rebecca Rush Garet.
A non-smoker, Scott had fought unflinchingly against squamous cell and small-cell lung cancer diagnoses since September.
Scott was a private math tutor, a substitute teacher, a soccer coach and player, an active member of Faith Community Church Lakeside, and a competitive runner with Elite Runners Group. In May he completed the Cincinnati Marathon and this year ran his second Pittsburgh Marathon relay.
Scott graduated with honors from Trinity High School in 2003 and was a summa cum laude graduate of Waynesburg University in 2007. He succeeded both academically and athletically at both institutions, even becoming captain of the men’s soccer team at Waynesburg University in his senior season.
Scott is survived by his loving parents, James and Rebecca Garet of Washington; faithful brothers Michael (Rachel Begg) of Level Green and Jonathan Garet of Washington; special aunt and Godmother, Carolyn, and uncle, Larry Ashmore, of Taylorstown; great aunt, Catherine Kazakewicz of Washington; and cousins, Ken and Karen Butler of Spring Hill, Kansas.
His grandparents are the late Helen and George Garet and the late Dorothy and William Rush.
Scott thoroughly enjoyed taking road trips with his family, most recently a trip to the Outer Banks this past summer. He had also amassed quite a collection of stuffed monkeys over the years.
Scott will be tenderly remembered for his sense of humor, his devotion to family and friends, and the positive example he set for the young people he taught and coached.
Friends will be received Thursday from 2 to 9 p.m. in Piatt and Barnhill Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington. Additional visitation will be held in the funeral home from 9 to 11 a.m., the time of service, Friday, December 23rd, with Pastor Tom Lemmon officiating.
Burial will follow in Immaculate Conception Cemetery.
