Howard "Butch" Rood

Howard B. “Butch” Rood, 63, of Washington, died Saturday, March 21, 2009, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born November 25, 1945, in Washington, a son of the late Lonnie Lee and Ora E. Caldwell Barney Rood. Mr. Rood worked as a machinist for Rohr Industries for 25 years. He was a member of Meadowlands Sportsman’s Club, a Machinists’ Union and H.O.G. in Chula Vista, California. Mr. Rood was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, serving from his enlistment on October 26, 1967, until his honorable discharge on July 16, 1969, with a rank of Lance Corporal. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device and Presidential Unit Citation with two Stars. On June 28, 1997, he married Mary J. Almo Reese, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Jeffrey Michael (Fiancée Vicki A. Smith) Rood of Claysville; a daughter, Tammy (Larry) Houston of Prosperity, five step-children, Doug (Diseree) Reese of Daisytown, Juanita (Mark) Richards of Brave, and Tammy (Robert) Bell, Theresa (B.J. Parkinson) Huseman and Debra (Ed Roberts) Donley, all of Washington; a brother, Robert A. Barney of Washington; two sisters, Lenora (James) Morgan of Chula Vista, California and Nancy Rockey (Ronald) Plymire of Washington; six grandchildren, Michael Anthony Houston, Jonathan Tyler Houston, Brittany Nicole Houston, Amanda Nicole Cassidy, Mercedes Lynn Rood and Destiny Asialee Rood; 20 step-grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are two sons, Howard Blaine Rood, II, and Richard Scott Rood; two brothers, Frank Sollinger and Lonnie Barney; an infant brother; and two infant sisters. Friends will be received 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, March 27th. Burial will follow in National Cemetery of the Alleghenies. Military rites will be accorded graveside by Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 331 South Main Street, Washington, PA 15301; or to American Diabetes Association, 300 Penn Center Boulevard, Suite 602, Pittsburgh PA 15235.
